James Brown

James was born on the July 4, 1959, in Dekalb, Illinois. His mother began to teach him to draw at a very early age beginning with cartoon characters and various line drawings. James would copy, modify and soon was creating his own art from original ideas.

The family moved to Kentucky and he began his high school education at Mercer County High School in 1973 where he excelled in art and shop studies. After graduation, he enlisted in the U. S. Army. Unfortunately this environment led to alcohol abuse and brushes with law enforcement. Incarceration in his young adult life left him feeling defeated but James clung to his art as a means of survival. He realized the artist within was calling him to his destined place in society. While refining his techniques, portraits and landscapes emerged as his primary subjects. The governor's staff recognized his gifted talent and arranged for work release to create decorations and poster for Kentucky.

While exhibiting his work at the Franklin County Expo, James met his future wife, Brenda. Married on January 1, 1998, the Browns reside in Lawrenceburg. In addition, to selling his work at local fairs and expos, James has recently displayed his work at various locations across central Kentucky.

James Currently works in Harrodsburg at Edgewood Craft Shop. He believes, "Art is a chance to rise above the daily life, to achieve something higher through imagination. After all, imagination in God's hands created the entire universe."
